The All-Rounded Musician (Part 3)

12 Dec 2025

In Part 1 and Part 2, we discussed how international examination boards function—not as teacher training institutions, but as organizations that simply provide examinations. Because of this, many private music teachers are not systematically trained, which leads to inconsistent teaching quality. Without a proper learning system, many students develop weak foundations and often give up their musical journey before reaching higher levels.

At Dorayme, we provide a complete music education supported by a structured system. All our teachers are trained to use this system. Over the years, we have successfully nurtured many independent learners—pianists with strong sight- reading skills who can learn any music by themselves after they graduate.

However, we also recognized a limitation. We have trained skilled pianists, but many of them are:

  • unable to play by ear
  • unfamiliar with composing or arranging for different instruments
  • unable to transcribe music through listening
  • not confident reading pop lead sheets
  • unable to accompany singers without a written score
  • uncomfortable performing collaboratively, as they are used to playing solo piano

So the question is: Can we do better?

Introducing “Setting the Standard” Workshop

Earlier this year, we launched the Setting the Standard Workshop to help students gain these essential musicianship skills—skills that are difficult to cover within the time constraints of weekly lessons.

However, the current workshop format can only accommodate a limited number of students, and the additional workshop fee has made it less accessible for some families.

We want every Dorayme student to have the opportunity to become not just a refined pianist, but a true all-rounded musician. To make this possible, we are planning to move the Setting the Standard Workshop online, reducing the fee from $48 to just $20, while allowing more students to join.

This is a new approach, and we are still exploring the best way to run the workshop effectively online.
